The 2010 Winter Extended Classes are listed below. Links to the registration forms are found on this page. Forms are also available in the front office.

After school classes begin 10 minutes after the dismissal bell. Students should proceed directly from their classroom to their after-school class location and check in with their instructor. Please pick up your student promptly at the end of the extended class.
Art:
Visual Arts - Impressionism
Time: 10 Tuesdays, 3:10-4:10 PM
Instructor: Rachel Mueller
Class Dates: January 12 - March 23. No class March 16.
Cost: $161 (includes $38 for materials and $3 PTSA fee.) 50% off tuition for siblings. Total fee for two siblings is $262, discount does not apply to materials or PTSA fee.
Rachel Mueller is back with her amazing and popular visual arts courses. This winter, the class will study Nature in the Pacific Northwest, with an emphasis on clay techniques. Students will explore the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. They will discover the eruption of Mount St. Helens, fossils, rain forest and marine habitats. They will capture recovering species, wild flowers, insects and trees.
Students combine techniques of space, composition, light and shadow, one-point perspective, two-point perspective and creating depth and 3-D using pencils, charcoals, soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic, clay and foil.
Illustration Inspired by Caldecotts
This class is open to boys and girls in grades 3-6.
Time: 5 Thursdays, 3:10-4:10 PM

Class Dates: February 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18
Cost: $115
Students grade 3 through 6 will create 4 pieces of artwork that are inspired by illustrators of Caldecott winning books. Students who took the “Inspired by Cal-decotts” writing class in January can create visual art inspired by their writing. What? You didn't take the Writing Class? That's O.K., you can still come and cre-ate art. Projects will include an experimental acrylic painting, mixed media illustration, a zoom drawing, and printmaking.
Chess Club
This class is open to boys and girls in grades K-6.
Time: Mondays, 3:10-4:10 PM
Location: Library
Instructor: Chess Star Instructor Rick Shabata
Class Dates: Monday, January 11- Monday March 22; No Class 1/18, 2/15, 3/15.
Cost: $75 for the 8-week session. All classroom supplies are included.
The game of chess is known to enhance the development of valuable critical thinking and problem solving skills in young children that later can be applied in math and science. Chess is a universal learning tool; it offers a rare combination of learning and playing. In the chess club, students will play chess games, solve chess puzzles, learn chess strategies, and get all the tools to be ahead in the game. The instructors will follow Chess Academy curriculum developed by WGM Elena Donaldson, Three Time US Women’s Champion. Our goal is to create a fun and challenging environment for developing important academic skills using game of chess as a tool. We also will help students who want to play in scholastic chess tournaments. WGM Elena will be available to answer questions by email or meet with parents at the local scholastic tournaments.
Drama - Musical Theater with Studio East
This class is open to boys and girls in grades 3-6. Minimum enrollment for this class is 12 students. Please contact juliehaase@gmail.com directly, as soon as possible, if you are interested in enrolling in this class, so that we may closely monitor the number of students that are interested.

Here by popular demand--performance-based drama classes! Larry Leggett from Studio East will be joining us to present a one-act musical play with kids from grades 3-6. What a great opportunity for kids who love drama to become involved in creating performances that will be enjoyed by their families at the end of the session. Scripts under consideration for this session include: The Jungle Book, Trouble in Storybookland, and 101 Dalmatians.
Fitness
This class is open to boys and girls in grades K-6.

Instructor Dave Brinkman coaches students in a positive, uplifting and energetic atmosphere that promotes strength resistance training, flexibility, agility and mobility, cardiovascular conditioning, coordination techniques, sport specific enhancement, nutrition basics, teamwork, self development, and self control through game play, running, jumping, fitness drills and calisthenics.
Guitar Club

LEGO: Engineering Fundamentals
This class is open to boys and girls in grades 3-6.

A longer, more advanced engineering class for older builders. Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cars, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO® bricks. While exploring engineering, architecture and physics, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Returning students are given new projects that build on previous projects and concepts.
Play-Well TEKnologies provides project-based programs designed to teach principles and methods of engineering, architecture, and science to grades K – 8th, utilizing the LEGO™ building system. We strive to build problem-solving skills, provide an opportunity for creative expression, foster a greater appreciation of how things work, and encourage the qualities of inquisitiveness, self- reliance, and self-confidence in children. We do this in the context of fun-filled engineering and architectural projects that both the children and our instructors enjoy!

LEGO engineering, designed for younger students. Create, Play, and Learn. Build a town, city, or star base with houses, buildings, pyramids, bridges, tunnels, towers, and more. Build motorized cars, trains, buses, and trucks; race them; crash them; repair them. Explore the many possibilities of LEGO® building systems while learning useful construction techniques.

Martial Arts
Open to boys and girls in grades K-6.
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30-8:15 AM

Start Date: This class runs continuously throughout the school year. Students may join this class at any time, provided there is space available. Ask for a pro-rated price.
Cost: $98 per 8-week session.
Emphasis is put on discipline, respect, and learning realistic self-defense. Students develop self-confidence by setting goals, striving for excellence and accomplishing what they set out to do. Physically, students get in better shape while improving posture and coordination and many will acquire skills they never thought possible, unlocking their own potential and giving them a positive outlook that can last a lifetime. No martial arts experience is necessary to join the program.

Cost: $63. Kids should bring their own racquet.
Introductory tennis skills—ready position, ground strokes, volleys...and totally fun (and sometimes silly) fitness relays and games! New and continuing students welcome. Students must provide own racquet. Class emphasis is on fundamental skills, fitness and most of all FUN! Enrollment limited to 12 students.
